Published in Paris in 1856, Les Solennités de l’Église Catholique is a beautifully preserved devotional work exploring the principal solemnities, feast days, saints, and traditions of the Catholic Church. The title page notes that the work was published with the approval of Cardinal Ferdinand-François-Auguste Donnet, Archbishop of Bordeaux, and was written by Abbé Jouhanneaud.

The book is especially beautiful for its numerous full-page black-and-white illustrations depicting religious ceremonies, saints, clergy, worshippers, and scenes of 19th-century Catholic life. Its elaborate black binding is richly embossed with scrolling decoration and finished with a striking polychrome and gilt cover depicting the Virgin Mary surrounded by lilies, palms, flowers, and foliage.

A wonderful piece not only for a collector of antique religious books, but as an exceptionally decorative object representative of French Catholic culture during the Second Empire.

Condition is consistent with its 170-year age, including scattered foxing and toning throughout the pages as pictured, and gentle wear to the spine adding to its unmistakably antique character.
