Antique Oil Portraits on Canvas of a Young boy & Girl in Giltwood Frames
A pair of 19th-century oil portraits on canvas, each painted bust-length against a deep, muted background. The boy wears a rich red jacket over a pale collar, with soft brown curls framing his face. His companion wears a narrow band in her curled hair, a cream dress with a delicately detailed neckline, and a blue wrap draped around her shoulders with pearl accessories in her hair. Gentle highlights across their faces and clothing bring warmth and dimension to the dark compositions.
Likely painted as a commission for a family with the two subjects being siblings.
Matching giltwood frames with ornamental borders and beaded inner edges unite the portraits along with beautiful craquelure that a reveals their age. Displayed together, their complementary colors and balanced scale make a beautiful focal point above a console or on either side of a mirror.
Please note slight damage to an upper corner of the female portrait's frame.
