French Courting Scene Oil Painting After Nicolas Lancret
A romantic late 19th century French oil painting on board depicting an intimate courting scene after the work of Nicolas Lancret (1690–1743), the celebrated French Rococo painter known for his elegant fêtes galantes. A young couple is shown tucked beneath the trees in a tender embrace, their richly colored period dress and secluded garden setting capturing the playful romance and refinement for which Lancret’s compositions became known.
Painted more than a century after Lancret’s lifetime, the work reflects the 19th century revival of interest in the romantic imagery and aristocratic leisure of 18th century France. Presented in an ornate gilt frame with scrolling foliate decoration and a small “LANCRET” plaque. The antique frame displays visible age-related wear, including areas of gilt loss, rubbing, and surface wear as pictured, adding to its beautifully timeworn character.
