Bronzed Spelter “Rose Chéri” Bust
A charming early 20th century French bronzed spelter bust depicting Rose Chéri (1824–1861), the celebrated French actress and theatrical star of 19th century Paris. Born Rose-Marie Cizos, Chéri became particularly associated with the Théâtre du Gymnase, where she enjoyed considerable success and became one of the admired actresses of her era.
She is portrayed here with finely modeled features, long curled ringlets, delicate jewelry, and period dress, capturing the romantic elegance associated with her public image. Raised upon an integral pedestal bearing the title “Rose Chéri,” the dark bronzed finish gives the sculpture the appearance and presence of aged bronze. A wonderful piece of French theatrical history as well as a beautiful decorative portrait.
