Mother of Pearl & Abalone Jewelry Box with Dated Inscription

A beautiful late 19th century jewelry/gift box intricately veneered in luminous mother of pearl and richly colored abalone shell. The lid features a striking geometric checkerboard design and silver cartouche, combining softly iridescent mother of pearl with flashes of deep green, blue, and violet abalone, while the exterior is finished with a delicate silver  escutcheon and raised on petite wooden bun feet.

Opening to reveal a wonderfully rich deep indigo velvet interior, the box bears a handwritten inscription to 'Maria' dated December 24, 1870, offering a particularly charming glimpse into its history. The natural variation and incredible iridescence of the shell make this a jewel-like decorative piece in its own right, perfect for holding treasured jewelry and keepsakes.
