The Farewell of Venus & Adonis, antique oil on canvas

An academic oil on canvas after Pierre-Jacques Cazes’ interpretation of ‘Venus and Adonis’. Cazes transformed the dramatic Baroque story into a more elegant French pastoral scene, surrounding the lovers with hunting dogs, a peacock, other animals and an elaborate fountain. This later interpretation follows Cazes’ composition while preserving the myth’s central moment: Venus attempting to prevent Adonis from leaving for the hunt that will ultimately claim his life.
